Have you ever had a day, week, month or even a year where God just keeps speaking to you? Maybe you didn’t listen the first 100 times He tried speaking to you so He tried 100 more ways.
God doesn’t just speak in one way.
Some people hear best by reading. Others hear best when His Word is spoken through others. Still some people may need to look at pictures. I don’t know how He speaks to you or how you are able to listen to Him best, but I know how I hear God best and He’s been saying a lot this past week. More so than previous weeks. Or maybe it’s just that I was finally quiet enough to hear Him this week.
God still speaks today like He did that day in the burning bush to Moses. He’s as audible as when Jonah heard Him after he was spit out of a whale. He’s even as vocal today as when He spoke to Joshua telling him to march around Jericho.
God wants to speak to you. Are you listening?
I know you’re probably wondering, “What does listening to God have to do with this Weeks Bible verse?” When we listen to God, we hear what God wants us to do. When we not only hear what God wants us to do, but do it…God’s glory shines through us.
How awesome that every little task that we do can bring glory to His name.
If that means I have dinner made every night or I loose 50 pounds…then so be it.
If that means I gain 50 pounds or I let my spouse take control of our finances…then so be it.
If that means I talk to the stranger at the store or make a sunshine basket for people I don’t know to brighten their day…then so be it.
Whatever I do, I pray it glorifies God’s name. I pray you do too. I pray that when we wake up in the morning, our first thoughts aren’t “UGH! Another day I have to get up early and do blah, blah, blah.” I pray instead that our thoughts be, “HALLELUJAH! What can I do for you today, Lord?”
God may want you to go to a bar while He may want another to never step foot in a bar. Our Creator may ask you to speak in front of 100 strangers while He may ask someone else to sit quietly in their cubicle. He may be telling one person to write a book while He tells another to buy a book and give it away.
You have to listen to what God is speaking to you. You can’t be focused on what God is saying to your neighbor or even your pastor. If you do what you think God is telling them to do, you’re acting on your behalf…not God’s. You are bringing glory to no one. You are only causing confusion.
Our God is not a God of confusion but a God of certainty and understanding.
When we do what God wants us to do, we show others that certainty and bring understanding to an otherwise chaotic world. We bring glory to His name.
I’ve been a christian for over 20 years. I never understood what it meant to bring glory to His name. Up until a few years ago, I thought I brought glory to His name by being a “good girl”, someone who is respected in our society, a quiet subdued conservative woman who always stayed in “her place”. I have a different view now because God has opened my eyes and I have listened.
Just because I know differently, doesn’t mean I’ve acted differently. I’ve still tried to be that “good girl” who others look up to. On occasion I would do what I felt God tugging at my heart to do, but would often get looked down upon so I would stop.
The last couple of years has been life changing for me. I’ve surrounded myself with others who believe that we are each put on this earth for different reasons. These same people encourage me to be whoever God has called me to be. They can’t tell me who that is, but they pray that God will tell me and I will be open to hearing Him when He speaks to me.
When I am who God wants me to be, I bring glory to His name. How simple yet how difficult. Our society, even our christian society oftentimes, turns their nose up at people being what God wants them to be.
Don’t let society stop you from bringing glory to God’s name. Even if it is your mother or father, your spouse or even your best friend…don’t let them stop you.
When you wake up each morning, ask God what He wants you to do. As you go through your day, ask again. Keep asking until you get an answer that you know without a doubt is from God. Then go do it. Go be it. Make God’s will be your number 1 focus throughout the day, every day.
You will not be disappointed. In fact, you will have so much more joy and excitement in your life when you are doing what God wants you to do. That’s how God created us…to crave Him…to crave His will…to be complete doing His work.
